THE GENDER DIVIDE

In 2016, the City of Edmonton asked its employees dozens of questions related to how they feel about their jobs and workplaces. The city released the answers to 42 of those questions, broken down by branch and gender. To determine where men and women feel differently about their city jobs, Postmedia counted the number of times in a branch where women’s collective responses to a question was 10 per cent higher or lower than men’s collective responses. For example, in real estate and housing, 91 per cent of men said their immediate supervisor “encourages them to offer their opinions and ideas.” For women, the number was 68 per cent.
