Making spirits bright at Edmonton Meals on Wheels

-

The upcoming holiday season is something most people look forward to.

It’s a time to indulge in food, gifts and good company.

But for those who find themselves homebound within in our city, this is not the case. For many, just leaving the house is an unbearable task. Add in ice and snow, and these people become completely isolated.

Edmonton Meals on Wheels is looking to change that by participating in Giving Tuesday on Nov. 28 as a way to kick-start its holiday donations.

What is Giving Tuesday? It’s a global movement meant to encourage everyone from everywhere to give back.

Being a local not-for-profit organization, Edmonton Meals on Wheels depends on donations to be able to assist its clients. Participating in this campaign is a way to raise awareness about its clients’ needs and how people can get involved.

What is Edmonton Meals on Wheels? It is a charity that provides home delivered meals to individuals within Edmonton. Not only does it provide healthy meals, but its volunteers provide friendly visits that can help combat urban isolation. Its clients are a diverse group of people who, for many different reasons, are in need of some help.

A main focus of theirs is to provide a sense of independence to those who, without this service, would not have it. It is through the kindness of those who donate time and money Edmonton Meals on Wheels is able to provide assistance to these people.

How can you help? Edmonton Meals on Wheels is currently seeking gift wrap, gift bags and small gift items that will be directly donated to its annual Holiday Gift Drive. Edmonton Meals on Wheels hosts this event every year to be able to provide its clients with a little extra holiday cheer when they need it most.

The organization will be accepting donations from now until Dec. 15. Some suggested gifts are coffee and tea, winter wear and toiletries.

If you are looking for another easy way to get involved, Edmonton Meals on Wheels will be selling its limited edition Holiday Pins in the office for $6. The purchase of each pin will subsidize two meals for a client in need. Additionally, Edmonton Meals on Wheels is in need of monetary donations to be able to continuously provide the support its clients need. Donations can be made online, over the phone or in the office. Let’s use this holiday season as a reason to rally together and make a difference.

To donate items to the Holiday Gift Drive, or to purchase a holiday pin, stop by the Edmonton Meals on Wheels office at 11111 103 Ave., Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please note that all items donated to the gift drive must be new. Monetary donations can be made online at www.mealsonwhe elsedmonton.org/pages/donate, by calling 780-429-2020, or in person at the office.
