Standoff in Sherwood Park ends peacefully, police say

Emergency Response Team called to scene where man reportedly pointed gun at woman

-

A standoff in a Sherwood Park industrial area that began with a man pointing a firearm at a woman ended peacefully Tuesday, RCMP said.

Officers responded to a business at 84 Avenue around 2:03 a.m. after receiving a firearms complaint, after which they closed off the area.

Police were told a man had pointed a firearm at a woman. The woman left and contacted police.

In a news release, RCMP said they had reason to believe the suspect was still inside the business and had another woman with him.

The RCMP’s Emergency Response Team was called in to help arrest the man.

At around 10 a.m., a woman was released from the building without incident, RCMP said.

The man was taken into custody two hours later.

Neither of the women were injured.

RCMP spokeswoman Const. Chantelle Kelly said Tuesday morning that the first officers on scene were involved in a brief chase with a person fleeing the business “at a high rate of speed.

“There was a short pursuit and we ended up stopping the vehicle and dealing with the male — but the male wasn’t our suspect from the business, and it ended up being a friend or associate of the male we were dealing with.”

Officers then returned to the scene and barricaded the area.

“The suspect is associated to the business, but we don’t believe he is an employee or known to the police,” Kelly said.

Adam Millie, who works nearby, said police appeared to be using a loudspeaker to talk to a man inside A&M Machining Services.

Business owners and employees were asked to avoid the area.

Traffic was reopened around noon Tuesday.

RCMP said they will provide an update on the case if charges are laid.
