Hundreds of toys and more for those less fortunate

Games, stuffed animals and hundreds of toys filled a room Monday at the Bissell Centre during a Festive Giveaway event for parents living in poverty who need to provide Christmas gifts for their children.

“Last year, I just had to go with whatever money I had. It was pretty rough. I never knew anything about outside support before,” said Sheryl Steinhaure, the mother of four boys ranging in age from six to 22. “I’m not fussy with what I get; they already helped me very much.”

Families registered in the Bissell Centre’s programs can drop by the organization until Wednesday to pick gifts for their young ones.

Along with the toys, there are also hygiene products and clothes they can take home. Volunteers help parents wrap the presents so they can leave a nice surprise under the Christmas tree.

“It ensures that they can celebrate Christmas with their families,” said Darren Brennan, spokesperson for the Bissell Centre.

More than 150 families will be receiving aid this year for the holidays. The project has grown since it began 20 years ago.

Last year, it provided gifts for children in more than 100 families.

Donations come from various United churches throughout the city and individuals who donate money online and drop off items at the centre.

“This is just a really big bonus, but all year round they really help me,” said Jaimie Gessner while she was picking out baby clothes for her seven-month-old baby.

As the mother of seven children, she was hoping to also find baby dolls for the older girls and cool toys for her boys.

Throughout the year, she receives items from the centre such as baby food, wipes and diapers to help her take care of her family.

The centre itself has been running since 1910 in Edmonton’s inner city. It supports families in need by providing emergency clothing, food and hygiene products year round. It also offers childcare services and workshops to help parents find employment.
