Edmonton police have released shocking video of two pedestrians being hit by a van in December as officers continue to search for the driver responsible.

On Dec. 13, a 49-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man were crossing the street in a marked crosswalk near 96 Street and 71 Avenue around 5 p.m. when they were run down by a white van.

“This video clearly shows the suspect vehicle striking the two pedestrians and leaving the scene of the collision,” Const. Pauline Westman, with the EPS major collision investigations unit, said Thursday.

Both pedestrians were sent to hospital with serious injuries.

Investigators said the oldermodel white van with a black roof rack, no windows and an Alberta licence plate slowed down after striking the pedestrians before fleeing the scene.

Despite appeals to the public for help, the driver has yet to be identified.

Investigators are sharing surveillance footage of the collision hoping the driver or van involved will be found.

“The images are without a doubt disturbing, and also clearly reveal the lack of empathy displayed by the driver for leaving those pedestrians lying on the side of the road in critical condition,” said Westman. “We need the public’s assistance in finding that van and its driver.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
