A man has been left with lifethreatening injuries after a serious crash at the intersection of 132 Avenue and 97 Street early Saturday morning.

The two-vehicle collision happened around 1 a.m. after a speeding vehicle crashed into the back of another vehicle stopped at a red light, said a news release from police on Saturday.

“Major collision investigation unit investigators have determined that speed was a major factor in the collision. Alcohol has been ruled out but it is yet to be determined if drugs are a factor in this incident,” unit Sgt. James McLeod says in a news release.

A Mitsubishi Outlander was stopped at a traffic light in the southbound lanes of 97 Street at 132 Avenue when it was hit by a Honda Pilot driving at a high speed, police said.

The Mitsubishi was pushed into the middle of the intersection and the Honda veered over the west curb of 97 Street onto the sidewalk, hitting a cement light standard, an advertisement-trailer sign, a fire hydrant and stopped against a second light standard.

The 18-year-old male driver of the Honda Pilot was ejected from the vehicle and is in hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Two female passengers aged 16 and 17 have non-life threatening injuries and have since been released from hospital, police said.

The driver of the Mitsubishi and a female passenger were treated on scene.

Southbound lanes of 97 Street between 135 Avenue and 130 Avenue were closed for hours Saturday morning as police investigators scoured the scene for clues.

Charges are pending against the driver of the Honda Pilot.
