A local women’s group is looking to paint the town purple in honour of International Women’s Day.

In 2017, Works for Women embarked on a plan to distribute wristbands for International Women’s Day, and they wound up distributing a total of 5,000 purple wristbands.

“It was incredible right away and we recognized there was a lot of interest,” said Works for Women co-founder Chelsey McLeod.

Since then the group has been doing a number of different things but they primarily hold monthly challenges designed to connect and educate people to resources and provide tools to empower people to create dialogue and create change.

“It’s really a place to educate and create connections and provide people with resources to make Alberta a better place for women to lead and work,” said McLeod.

This year they set their goal to the sky — the city skyline that is.

What started as asking the city to light the High Level Bridge purple for International Women’s Day on March 8 has now spread to lighting the entire city skyline purple.

“We’ve secured the High Level Bridge, the Muttart Conservatory, Kelly Ramsey Building, WSP Place, Epcor Tower, Stantec, Hotel Macdonald, ATB, Jubilee, Scotia, the Alberta Art Gallery, World Trade Centre, the U of A and Edmonton House,” said McLeod.

They’re still hoping to get more buildings to paint the downtown skyline with purple light on Wednesday evening and Thursday.

“There’s lots of excitement and lots of people in the community want to get behind it,” McLeod said.
