NDP begins robocalls, Sikhs gain helmet-law exemption

- EMMA GRANEY

A robotic man’s voice phoning Albertans on behalf of the NDP tells listeners “hearing from Albertans is important to us” and says Premier Rachel Notley has been working hard to secure a pipeline.

“If you support Rachel’s actions, please take a moment to show your support at www.yesalbertapipeline.ca,” the voice says.

The robocalls are being reported by Albertans all over the province. Some people are also getting texts.

According to the NDP, calls are being randomly made to numbers with 403, 780 and 587 area codes.

The NDP caucus wouldn’t share the cost of the robocalls, but said it’s all coming from the party’s caucus budget and has been approved as an appropriate outreach expense by the legislature management office.

SIKHS GRANTED HELMET EXEMPTION

The Alberta government has granted turban-wearing Sikhs the right to ride a motorcycle without a helmet.

An exemption for drivers or passengers who are over 18 and are bona fide members of the Sikh religion takes effect April 12.

Alberta is the third province to allow the exemption, following British Columbia and Manitoba.

Transportation Minister Brian Mason said the change comes after years of lobbying by the Sikh community.

Baltej Singh Dhillon, the first RCMP officer to wear a turban, said in a statement the decision “demonstrates a deep respect for the traditions and customs of the Sikh community” and is testament to the government’s commitment to respecting the diversity and religious rights of all Albertans.
