AAA Pats’ Telus Cup trail ends in Lethbridge

-

The road to the 2018 Telus Cup ran through Lethbridge this season.

Unfortunately, that’s as far as Edmonton’s Knights of Columbus midget AAA Pats will travel on that road to Sudbury, Ont., a journey that 149 teams across the country set out on at the beginning of the season.

The Pats fell 6-1 Sunday to the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the fifth and deciding game of a nolove-lost Alberta Midget Hockey League championship final.

With the win, the Hurricanes move on in their effort to represent the West Region.

“It was a great series and hard fought,” the Pats posted on Twitter. “The boys battled hard. Good luck and all the best to you against Fraser Valley.”

Carl Tetachuk was the winning goalie for Lethbridge, while Braedan Stephen was in net for the Pats on Sunday.

Lethbridge counted the lone goal of the first period and then moved ahead 2-0 before Edmonton got on the board with a power-play goal by Brett Rylance.

Mitchell Vaillant and Jake Aston drew assists.

Lethbridge struck again to make it 3-1 after two periods, before doubling their offensive output in the final frame. Around the rinks: Jessica Younker and Caitlin Watson scored as the Calgary Fire White shut out the St. Albert Sharks 2-0 in the midget female elite Alberta provincial championship final on Sunday in Calgary.
