Young Lowe to suit up for Oilers

- Jim Matheson

In Keegan Lowe’s draft year, then Edmonton Oilers team president Kevin Lowe asked scouts not to consider taking his son because he didn’t want to see the Like Father, Like Son storyline.

That was seven years ago. Now Keegan Lowe is an Oilers farmhand who will get his chance to wear the same jersey his dad did when the defenceman suits up against the Vegas Golden Knights.

“The player coming in on an emergency basis will play,” Oilers head coach Todd McLellan said.

So Keegan, who’s had two earlier call-ups only to sit in the press box, will wear No. 47 in his first Oilers game. He’s played in two NHL games already — with the team that drafted him, the Carolina Hurricanes, in 2011-12, when he created a stir by fighting then-Philadelphia Flyers centre Vincent Lecavalier.

Lowe, who has played 307 AHL games, will play because Andrej Sekera and Yohann Auvitu are out; neither skated with the team Wednesday.

“Sekera won’t play again this season. He’s got a minor problem with the same knee (surgery last spring ) and it’s not worth it to fight through it,” said McLellan.

Sekera stumbled on Monday against the Minnesota Wild on a play that seemed harmless but apparently tweaked something.

Auvitu took a slap shot off his left foot as he tried to move a Minnesota player. His foot’s swollen.

“It’s not broken,” said McLellan.

McDAVID WATCHING HALL

Connor McDavid has certainly been following Taylor Hall’s MVP-type season in New Jersey.

“It was pretty public when he was going through that (consecutive games point streak) run and he’s still a good friend,” McDavid said. “I keep tabs on him and check up on him. Now with Patty (Maroon) there, I find myself watching Jersey. They’re a fun team to watch. They could make some (playoff noise).”

He won’t reveal if he’s going to the world championship to play for Canada.

“Still lots up in the air. Don’t know who’s going, who’s coaching, or if it’s been announced,” he said. “You definitely want to be in a position where you don’t have to go to worlds, but if you aren’t in the playoffs, it’s a great opportunity to put a stamp on what’s not been a great year.”

McDavid is really looking forward to playing against the Sedins for the final time Saturday.

“They thought and saw the game so differently, and they did it together, which was pretty cool,” McDavid said. “They saw plays I wouldn’t even look for.”
