Early-morning shooting leaves one man dead
No suspects identified yet as homicide investigation begins in Evansdale area
A man is dead after an early morning shooting in northeast Edmonton, said city police.
Officers were called about reports of shots fired in the Evans dale neighbourhood at about 3:35 a.m., according to an Edmonton police news release issued Sunday.
But when police arrived in the area of 150 Avenue and 92 Street, they learned that an injured person had already been rushed to hospital by family members.
The man later died of his injuries.
“All the parties were actually gone by the time we got there, so we didn’t know what we had until we verified that there was a shooting victim,” northeast division Staff Sgt. Paul Czerwonka said Sunday.
Czerwonka said possible suspects remain unknown.
According to the news release, homicide detectives have taken over the suspicious death investigation.
A stretch of the street in front of the Evansdale Community Centre remained taped off Sunday morning as officers took photographs and used a metal detector to search the area.
A number of evidence markers investigators set up earlier were removed as the examination wrapped up and identification officers left the scene.
However, just to the east of the taped-off block on 150 Avenue, a single spent shell casing lay on the pavement near the south side sidewalk.
After learning about the casing, an officer who remained guarding the scene covered it with a pylon and called his supervisors.
The news release from police describes the investigation as being in the “preliminary stages.”
