Solo trailer tries to ease fans’ doubts about movie

- MICHAEL CAVNA

“I’ve waited a long time for a shot like this.”

Well, young Han, break up the narrative carbonite and board your Millennium Falcon, because your shot has arrived.

The second trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story landed late Sunday, and the undercurrent to the two-minute-plus clip seems to be: Let’s assuage your concerns, dear viewer, about this once-troubled production.

So we get the pieces of the “putting-together-a-crew” plot — Ocean’s 11 style? — snapping snugly together like Star Wars Lego bricks.

Sure, the trailer — like young Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) himself — might still look “a little rough around the edges,” but we’re being reassured with touches great and small that all is good.

“You’re after something. Is it revenge? Money? Or is it something else?” says Qi’Ra (Emilia Clarke), ticking off the cues that clue in viewers to the beats of a sci-fi heist.

“I know a guy. He’s the best smuggler around,” we hear as the trailer introduces us to Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover), who surely is retro-cool, we’re signalled, because he punctuates phrases with “baby.”

Then there’s the requisite “I’ve got a really good feeling about this.”

And how you feel about the tone of this trailer might be reflected entirely in how you view Ehrenreich’s spin on the four-decade-old catchphrase.

Original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller having left in midproduction over “creative differences,” Disney quickly brought in veteran Ron Howard for reshoots and to complete the project.

His finished film is set to open on May 25 in Canada and the U.S., where it’s expected to have a debut north of $150 million.

The film will have its world première at the Cannes Film Festival, more than a week before it opens wide.
