Man, 21, charged after teen struck in crosswalk
A 21-year-old man has been charged in the hit-and-run of a girl who was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries Tuesday evening after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in southeast Edmonton, police said.
The collision happened near 38 Avenue and 31 Street at 6:38 p.m., and the girl is now in a stable condition. The girl suffered “significant” head trauma and possibly a broken leg.
Witness statements helped the police locate the alleged driver of the vehicle, who was subsequently taken into custody by southeast division patrol officers later Tuesday evening, said Scott Pattison, spokesperson for Edmonton Police Service, in a statement.
At the time, police said the name of the suspect was not being released for mental health reasons.
In a news release late Wednesday, police spokeswoman Cheryl Sheppard said they were “now in a position to release the name of the accused involved in last night’s hit-and-run.”
Cuyler Maringer is charged with failure to stop at the scene of collision and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
The marked crosswalk is on two wide, divided roads but has no overhead flashing lights. It’s been identified as needing upgrades but is number 527 out of the 659 crosswalks, meaning city officials expect it will take decades to fix under the current funding model.
