Man faces murder charge after body found in rural area

A 33-year-old Edmonton man is charged with first-degree murder after the body of another Edmonton man turned up along a rural Strathcona County road, say RCMP.

The body of 24-year-old Harpreet (Harry) Kang was discovered the night of April 9 near Township Road 515 and Range Road 234. RCMP and Edmonton city police were both called to the scene.

The RCMP major crimes unit quickly identified a suspect after officers connected a blue 2018 Acura TLX to the case.

On Thursday, police arrested Matthew Anderson who has since been charged. He remains in custody and is to appear in Strathcona County court on May 16.

As part of the investigation, the cause of Kang ’s death was withheld after an autopsy was completed.

The RCMP forensic identification section, Edmonton city police and Emergency Medical Services personnel were on scene the night Kang ’s body was found.

Kang ’s homicide marks the second death being investigated by Strathcona County RCMP and the RCMP major crimes unit in less than a month.

On March 24, around 9 a.m., Strathcona County officers were called to a rural property near Range Road 213, south of Highway 16.

While RCMP initially referred to the body found as a “sudden death,” officers have now confirmed the death is being investigated as suspicious.

No further details have been released since an autopsy on the body was conducted. Further toxicology tests were scheduled.
