30 Volunteers, 30 Days See the difference you can make

-

Giving back. It’s part of our identity, isn’t it?

It’s what makes us come together as a community when our neighbours need us most. It’s what keeps our city thriving.

But volunteering doesn’t just help those in need, it helps the volunteer as well. Studies have shown it can improve your mental well-being and help to build new skills, as well as improve your overall health.

At Edmonton Meals on Wheels, a local non-profit that helps to ensure food security and a break in isolation for homebound Edmontonians, volunteers are the key to success.

My hope is to continue to help make a difference in the lives of others, one meal and one conversation at a time.

Jean, a meal delivery driver and grocery shopper, says her favourite part about volunteering is knowing she is making a difference, just by delivering a healthy meal and a friendly conversation. She says it’s nice being there for people, especially when they don’t have anyone else to talk to.

“Being part of these small moments for clients is one the hidden gems of being an Edmonton Meals on Wheels volunteer,” she says.

Edmonton Meals on Wheels offers a variety of volunteer positions ranging from morning, afternoon and evening shifts, and there are several different roles to choose from, including kitchen help, meal delivery and grocery shopping. All it takes is one volunteer to make change someone’s day around, and Jean intends to keep doing just that.

“My hope is to continue to help make a difference in the lives of others, one meal and one conversation at a time.”

Want to give back like Jean? Now is the perfect time to get involved with Edmonton Meals on Wheels! Between May 22 and June 20, it is doing a big recruitment drive. The goal is to add 30 new regularly scheduled volunteers to its roster. With morning, afternoon and evening volunteer positions available, there is a place for everyone!

Whether you see yourself preparing food in the kitchen, delivering fresh, tasty meals to clients in need, or grocery shopping for your homebound neighbours, you’re sure to find your place with Edmonton Meals on Wheels. Consider donating your time and making a difference in your community, today.
