Highway inspections and Pride flag raising
President of Catholic trustees association resigns
Hundreds of commercial vehicles on Alberta highways will be inspected as part of an “international enforcement blitz,” said a government news release.
Transport officers will check compliance with federal and provincial regulations through Thursday (the effort started Tuesday). They will remove unsafe commercial vehicles from the roads if necessary, the release said.
Roadcheck 2018 is an annual event by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, which includes Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
“This 72-hour annual blitz is an opportunity to ensure commercial vehicles are safe for our highways,” said Justice Minister Kathleen Ganley in the release.
Last year, more than 600 inspections were conducted in Alberta. This year’s focus is hours-of-service requirements to ensure drivers are well-rested.
PRIDE FLAG RAISING
A rainbow flag will fly high at the Alberta legislature Thursday in anticipation of weeklong Pride celebrations across Edmonton.
Tourism and Culture Minister Ricardo Miranda is leading the afternoon flag-raising ceremony, which symbolizes the government’s commitment to inclusion and LGBTQ rights, said a Wednesday news release.
Miranda became Alberta’s first openly gay cabinet minister in 2016.
The flag ceremony starts at 12:15 p.m. in the Federal Building Plaza. The Edmonton Pride Festival will take place June 8 to 17 and includes a parade Saturday in Old Strathcona.
ACSTA PRESIDENT RESIGNS
The president of the Alberta Catholic School Trustees’ Association is resigning after more than two years in the role.
Adriana LaGrange will officially leave her position Sunday to pursue other endeavours, said a Wednesday news release.
The organization represents Catholic trustees in Alberta, Northwest Territories and Yukon.
St. Albert Catholic Schools board chair Serena Shaw will be taking over as president.
LaGrange was first elected to the Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools board of trustees in 2007.
