AHS warns of measles exposure in Jasper area

- KEITH GEREIN

A patient with measles who was in Jasper, Hinton and Edson last week could have exposed others to the highly infectious illness, Alberta Health Services said Friday.

AHS said public health officials learned the patient visited a number of eateries, a train station and a hotel in the area from July 4-6. Anyone without proper immunizations and who came in contact with the infected individual is considered to be at risk for contracting the disease.

Those at risk should monitor themselves for symptoms for three weeks after their potential exposure, the health authority said in a news release. Symptoms include a fever of 38.3 C or higher, a blotchy rash that shows up three to seven days after the fever, coughing, a runny nose and red eyes.

Those who develop symptoms should stay away from public spaces, including health facilities, and instead call HealthLink at 811.
