Motorcyclist killed in crash with car

- JONNY WAKEFIELD

A 25-year-old man is dead and a female passenger is fighting for her life after a collision involving a stolen motorcycle at 75 Street and 101 Avenue early Sunday.

The Honda CBR 1000 RR motorcycle was reported stolen on Saturday, Edmonton police spokesman Scott Pattison said via email Sunday evening.

The motorcyclist and passenger were taken to hospital with lifethreatening injuries. The man died in hospital and the 22-year-old woman remains in critical condition, Pattison said.

Police said it is believed a Mercury Marquis was southbound on Wayne Gretzky Drive was turning east onto 101 Avenue when the collision occurred with the northbound motorcycle.

Debris littered the intersection as investigators worked to learn what happened. The car was flipped around pointing west. The rear passenger-side tire had been torn away. A blue and grey helmet lay about 30 metres from the motorcycle a couple hours after the crash.

Tom Enright awoke to the sound of the crash around 6 a.m. He lives in a home near the intersection’s southeast corner. He looked out the window and saw the intersection was strewn with debris.

A motorcyclist himself, he ran out to try to help. A crowd had gathered and someone was giving one of the victims life-saving measures.

He figures the riders must have been thrown “hundreds and hundreds of feet.”

“The second rider must have rolled and the momentum took ‘em down the road.”

“It was just horrible,” he added. The area was closed for several hours while the police major collision investigations section investigated. Traffic reopened around 2:30 p.m.

Police continue to investigate and no charges have been laid.
