WESTRIDGE HOME RAZED

- JAMIE SARKONAK

Firefighters battle a blaze at a vacant luxury home on Wolf Willow Point in Westridge Sunday. Despite the work of 24 firefighters, the $2.3-million house was destroyed.

A vacant luxury Westridge home has been demolished after a fire ripped through the structure Sunday night.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services received a call at about 7:30 p.m., district Chief Scott Mead said. Despite the work of 24 firefighters and five fire trucks, he said the home was “probably going to be a loss.”

By Monday afternoon, it had been razed.

When firefighters arrived at the fire, the flames were already well advanced. The roof was damaged, making it too dangerous for crews to try to extinguish the blaze from inside the Wolf Willow Point home.

“It’s an elaborate house with a lot of difficult alcoves, so it’s proven difficult to fight,” Mead said. “Very stubborn little fire.” The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

The house, which Mead esti-

mated to be around one-and-a-half storeys with roughly 3,000 square feet, was recently sold and didn’t have furniture inside. Real estate company Royal LePage lists the assessed valued of the home at $2.3 million.

The fire service contacted the homeowners and the property was insured, Mead said.

The houses on each side of the site and the trees to the rear were not damaged.

Neighbour Baljodh Ranu, who moved across the street from the home last week, called firefighters after he heard a loud bang coming from the house.

“I was worried,” he said. “I hoped nobody was inside, no dogs, no cats.”
