The city has applied to annex 16 hectares from Sturgeon County to improve access to the Edmonton Energy and Technology Park.

An application supported by the county to annex land north of the Anthony Henday Drive-66 Street interchange was sent to the Municipal Government Board last month, according to a city news release Tuesday.

The two sides have been working on the issue, described as “a relatively small administrative process,” since 2014, the release says.

It’s intended to allow the city to provide better access to the park, which covers more than 4,800 hectares in northeast Edmonton designated for petrochemicalbased industries, manufacturing and logistics.

An agreement between the city and the county signed in June says that in 2017 the city bought the land, which includes a portion of 66 Street, from the province.

Neither the county nor the city will be compensated for the transfer because the city already owns the site and has been maintaining 66 Street, the agreement says.

The road alignment might be moved east to create a more efficient connection with 50 Street.

The county and city have asked for the move to take effect next Jan. 1.

The board will review the application and may hold hearings with affected landowners before making a recommendation for a final decision by the provincial government.
