More than docks needed along river
Re. “Amenities will boost river use,” Editorial, Aug. 24
As a longtime member of the Edmonton paddling community, I would like to thank the Edmonton Journal for highlighting and extolling our soon-to-be new and redeveloped docks and launches.
You are correct these facilities should assist more Edmontonians to take advantage of our greatest natural recreation resource, our river and river valley.
But just docks and launches are not enough; my fellow citizens have expressed in at least two City of Edmonton surveys that more is required, specifically canoe and kayak rental shops along the river.
Longtime paddlers have asked for storage facilities along the river where paddling clubs and private members’ boat gear can be kept.
Survey participants have also asked for enhanced shuttle services to ease the return to start. We have asked for more convenient washroom facilities to the new docks and launches.
The paddle sports are wonderful lifelong activities that promote mental health and physical fitness. The city and other municipalities of the River Valley Alliance need to take the lead to develop on-river, four-season outdoor activity centres that would serve the paddling sports in summer, cross-country skiing in the winter, and cycling and running year-round.
