Woman riding scooter killed in head-on crash

Police say SUV driver crossed centre line; Millwoods Road closed for several hours

- NICOLE BERGOT

A 58-year-old woman is dead after an SUV driver crossed the centre line on a straight stretch of road in Mill Woods Friday morning, say police.

Millwoods Road was closed in both directions for several hours between 38 Avenue and 85 Street as city police major collisions officers investigated the crash involving two SUVs and the two-wheel vehicle the woman was riding.

It was reported to police that the woman driving a Suzuki Burgman scooter was riding south on Millwoods Road when she was hit by a dark blue GMC Terrain that crossed the centre line while heading north, said police in a Friday afternoon news release.

Emergency crews called to the scene declared the woman dead. The 45-year-old man driving the Terrain — which came to halt after hitting a nearby transformer — did not sustain any injuries.

Though police identified the woman’s vehicle as a motorcycle, it is a Suzuki Burgman, a scooter. The wreckage sat in a heap in front of a third vehicle at the crash scene, a Toyota SUV.

Edmonton’s last motorcycle fatality was in June when a man struck a deer early in the morning on Anthony Henday Drive.

Earlier this month, a Calgary man died in hospital after he crashed a motorcycle during a race at Castrol Raceway in Nisku, south of Edmonton. It was the first fatality in the track’s 26-year history.

Police spokeswoman Carolin Maran said there have been 11 traffic fatalities in Edmonton this year. There were 30 in 2017.
