A 47-year-old man is charged with kidnapping involving a firearm after a 14-year-old girl was driven away from a city school, triggering a Friday afternoon Amber Alert.

A man in a red Nissan Maxima drove up to the school near 84 Street and 105 Avenue around 2:40 p.m. Friday before approaching a 14-year-old boy, asking him about the girl. After a brief exchange, the man pulled a handgun and ordered the boy to get into the car, said police in a Saturday news release.

The boy bolted into the school and, a short time later, witnesses saw the man approach the girl outside the school and watched as her cellphone was taken away before she hesitantly got into the man’s car, said police.

Witnesses reported the case to the school resource officer after the man drove away with the teen in his car.

An Amber Alert was issued and police quickly tracked down the pair at a laundromat near 97 Street and 118 Avenue where the girl was found unharmed.

The man was arrested before it was determined the pair are known to one another.

The city police child protection section continues to investigate.

The man is charged with kidnapping with firearm, possession of an offensive weapon, intimidation, use of a firearm while attempting an indictable offence, two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, and theft under $5,000.
