Audi’s A1 a punchy little hatchback we can’t buy

- NICK TRAGIANIS

WHAT IS IT?

Audi bills the second-generation A1 Sportback as both an ideal urban commuter and a long-distance companion. Beneath the bold new look, which references the original Ur- Quattro sports car of the 1980s, there’s more space, including 65 extra litres in the trunk.

It also features classy digital instrumentation with Audi’s Virtual Cockpit and an infotainment system that works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In lieu of a rotary knob, access to the infotainment is through the touch screen or buttons on the steering wheel.

It is a connected package aimed at a digital world.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

The new A1 Sportback has a choice of gasoline engines, ranging from a 1.0-L three-cylinder with 95 horsepower, to the top 2.0-L four with 200 horsepower. All are turbocharged and work with either a six-speed manual gearbox or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. In an odd move, however, the 2.0-L turbo-four makes do with a six-speed transmission. The A1’s optional Performance Package includes red brake calipers, larger brake discs, adjustable dampers, and Audi’s Drive Select system.

WHEN IS IT COMING?

With SUVs and CUVs ruling Canadian sales charts, there is little room for the A1 Sportback here. Don’t expect it to arrive any time soon.

SHOULD YOU BUY IT?

With the cost of gasoline being almost double in Europe when compared to Canada, there’s a very real need for a frugal runabout that doesn’t give up on the finer things in life.

The latest A1 Sportback fits that bill nicely; it’s cute, loaded with the right equipment and it can be customized to suit the driver, with two available roof colours and a splash of the exterior colour in the cabin.
