The owner of an apartment complex where a senior was found dead under suspicious circumstances Sunday said the woman and her husband were “model tenants.”

“They’re really long-term tenants,” said Craig Stout, owner of the Parkside Manor building at 10220 115 St. in Oliver.

“I didn’t know her very well but the gentleman I knew quite well. He’s a great guy, very articulate, intelligent — we never ever had any issues with them.”

Police were called to the threestorey apartment building around 9:40 a.m. Sunday. A police news release said officers received a call requesting they check on the welfare of two occupants of a suite in the building.

When they arrived, they found the woman dead and the man with undisclosed injuries. The man was treated and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. An autopsy on the woman was scheduled for early in the week.

Homicide detectives took over the investigation. Police said they are not looking for suspects.

Stout said Monday he believes they’ve lived there for about 25 years. The building’s manager lived across the hall and knew the couple well, he said.

Stout, a pharmacist, said the woman “obviously had dementia or some form of dementia.”

“They’ve been dealing with this for a number of years, at least 10,” he said.

“It’s sad,” he said, adding the man cared for her 24/7. “I don’t think that should be the defining thing of their relationship.”

“They deserve to ... have their story told,” he added. “There’s a lot more to (their) story.”

He said police seized the building ’s garbage bins and towed away the man’s car. They were also going through footage from CCTV cameras in the building.

If the woman’s death is ruled a homicide, it would be Edmonton’s 23rd of the year.
