Grey Cup week activities

- NATHAN MARTIN

The Eskimos may not be in the Grey Cup this year but the Grey Cup is in Edmonton and the city has a fever for football.

The Grey Cup festival is being held downtown along Jasper Avenue from 96 Street to 99 Street. It begins Wednesday and goes until game day next Sunday.

A kickoff party gets the festivities started from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, free for all ages on Jasper Avenue.

Ever wanted to ski or snowboard on Jasper Avenue?

What about a slide down a 45-metre slope in an inflatable tube?

Or what about a high-speed zip line above the river valley?

What if you wanted to take a fivestorey bungee jump?

You can do all those things at the Nissan Titan Street Festival running 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. from Thursday to Saturday. For the first time ever there’s a League of Legends tourney. People can enter the event starting on Thursday. First place gets 70 per cent of the prize pool.

Friday begins with a free pancake and sausage breakfast at Telus Park at 10053 Jasper Ave. from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Revellers can then head over to the Syncrude Mini Field on the festival site for daily football games and drills from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

If you feel more like moving your feet to a rhythm instead of closer to the uprights there are performers on the Cooper Equipment Entertainment Stage from 12 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. featuring acts like Notorious YEG, The Strumbellas, Maestro Fresh Wes and more.

Saturday begins with the Grey Cup parade beginning at 11:30 a.m. from the starting point on Jasper Avenue and 108 Street. It ends around 1:30 p.m. at 103 Street and 103 Avenue.

But before the epic battle begins on game day Sunday, head down to the Edmonton Expo Centre at 12 p.m. and join CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie and other fans as they march the Grey Cup down to The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium.

Game time kickoff is at 4 p.m. Sunday where the East Division champion Ottawa Redblacks and West Division champion Calgary Stampeders compete for the CFL’s top prize.

That’s just some of the things you can do during Grey Cup week. For more, go to greycupfestival.ca/ to see a complete list of activities.
