Bergman, limited-edition prints and a bewildering history lesson

-

THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY

Ingmar Bergman’s 45 films span seven decades, diving unflinchingly into difficult questions facing us humans — he’s one of the great cinematic portrait painters, especially of those under internal stress.

To celebrate the centenary of this singular artist’s birth, Metro Cinema is playing a number of the Swede’s great, yet perhaps lesserknown works (outside of, for example, The Seventh Seal and Persona). In Through a Glass Darkly, a meme which repeats through fiction to this day, Karin rejoins her emotionally disconnected family after recently being released from a mental hospital, only to slip from reality as she begins to believe she is being visited by God.

Guaranteed to be deeper than the latest Harry Potter spinoff (despite its interesting look at rising fascism with Johnny Depp playing, essentially, David Bowie).

Details: 7 p.m. at Metro Cinema (8712 109 St.), $13 at metrocinema.org
