There is no shortage of events in which to participat­e on Monday, Family Day. Here are 10 things to do in and around Edmonton that are fun for the whole family.

Art GAllery of AlbertA

Where: 2 Sir Winston Churchill Square

When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Last entry at 4 p.m.)

What: Enjoy free exhibition­s and art activities themed around the gallery’s current exhibition­s.

AlbertA legislAtur­e

Where: 10800 97 Ave. (Alberta Legislatur­e Building)

When: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What: Explore the legislatur­e with the Lost in the Legislatur­e History Hunt. Enjoy entertainm­ent with live music, a magician and the chance to dress up in the Agora Interpreti­ve Centre.

edmonton GArrison fAmily dAy festivAl

Where: 185 Hwy 28A, Lancaster Park (Edmonton Garrison Fitness Centre) When: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What: This year’s theme for the event is an Old Fashioned Carnival. Enjoy inflatable­s, carnival games, circus entertaine­rs, face painters and more. Admission is free with a donation to the food bank.

edmonton vAlley Zoo

Where: 13315 Buena Vista Rd. When: Noon to 4 p.m.

What: Bundle up and check out some winter-loving animals at the zoo, like the Arctic wolf and Canada lynx. Explore the polar bear crafts table and get creative with hands-on science experiment­s. Regular winter admission prices apply.

elk islAnd nAtionAl PArk

Where: 1-54401 Range Road 203, Fort Saskatchew­an

When: Noon to 4 p.m.

What: Explore the transforma­tion of the park into a whimsical winter wonderland. Enjoy a sleigh ride and take part in snowshoein­g and tobogganin­g or skating around the islands of Astotin Lake.

Fire And ice FestivAl

Where: 151 McKenney Ave., St. Albert When: Noon to 4 p.m.

What: Hosted by the St. Albert Firefighte­rs Local 2130, enjoy a kids’ firefighte­r obstacle course, petting zoo, crafts and pond hockey — make sure to bring your own hockey stick!

reuse Centre

Where: 6835 83 St.

When: Noon to 3 p.m.

What: Get crafty with a number of activities at Reuse Centre like DIY board games. A balloon artist will be on site and shop the store for puzzles, books, movies and crafting supplies that are $5 for up to 25 kg.

royAl AlbertA museum

Where: 9810 103A Ave.

When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What: Explore millions of years of history on display from dinosaurs to tiny insects with free admission on Family Day. Speaking of, if you’re into creepy-crawlers, check out the museum’s living bug gallery.

silver skate festivAl

Where: 9930 Groat Rd. (William Hawrelak Park)

When: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What: Take part in the last day of Edmonton’s longest running winter festival. Enjoy a variety of activities including public skating, live music, sleigh rides and of course hot chocolate.

strathConA County — everybody Gets to PlAy

Where: Strathcona County

When: Visit www.strathcona.ca/ familyday for a full list of centres and times

What: Support the Everybody Gets to Play program that helps families with limited income access free and subsidized recreation programs by attending events held at recreation­al centres across Strathcona County. Last year, 100 per cent of residents’ admission fees generated more than $19,000 for the program.

Edmonton Transit Services will run on a regular Saturday schedule on Family Day. Regular ETS fares apply.
