Jewelry maker crafts unique, dainty delights from memories

- Aleesha harris

In the world of jewelry, there are plenty of pieces to choose from. But even in the sea of options, the pieces created by the Edmonton-based brand Tiny Zen Memory seem to stand out.

The handmade creations feature personalized elements such as birthstones, handwriting and even paw prints from beloved pets, for a unique and truly oneof-a-kind item.

We caught up with Kate Ko, the brand’s owner, to learn about her line, how she started and what makes her creations stand out from the crowd.

Q When and why did you start Tiny Zen Memory?

A Tiny Zen Memory originated from the unfortunate loss of my close friend’s father. I made a necklace with the word “proud” — a word my friend’s father had repeatedly used to articulate his affection for my friend — in the last letter he wrote before he passed away. When I witnessed the overwhelming emotions my friend linked to the necklace, I was convinced that more people could benefit from the same joyous experience. So, I opened Tiny Zen Memory in fall 2018.

Q Did you have a formal background in jewelry-making? Or was this a passion project?

A I started making jewelry as a hobby six years ago when I worked as a pharmacist. I lived in rural Alberta by myself for work and was looking for a hobby I could do at home. At the beginning, it was just for fun. And I have been completely selftaught.

I started selling my jewelry in a small local store. It was just assembling charms and chains, and beaded gemstones jewelry at that time, but the pieces were pretty popular. One day, I realized how happy jewelry-making made me. It became my passion. I wanted to create a wider array of pieces and wanted to make my own pendants, but it was hard to learn on my own, so I went to a jewelry school and learned silversmithing.

Q What makes it different from other jewelry brands?

A We work with people’s memories. Our pieces aren’t just jewelry — each custom piece carries lots of meaning and love for the person who wears it. We make each piece with people’s story in mind and the design process is our opportunity to connect with them and their loved one. When a customer sends us a word from an old birthday card to re-create into a necklace or a paw print from a family dog who is no longer with us … we listen to their stories and do our best to create a special piece for them. We get lots of thank-you emails from our customers when they receive their jewelry.

Q What is the price range for your pieces?

A Our price is $30 to $160.

Q And lastly, where can people check them out?

A You can check us out at our website, Tinyzenmemory.com. aharris@postmedia.com
