Impey clinches first stage win at tour

-

South African rider Daryl Impey of Team Mitchelton-scott sprinted to his first Tour de France stage win on Sunday, capturing the 170.5-kilometre Stage 9 trek from Saint-etienne to Brioude.

“Pretty much, for me, from a Tour de France perspective, a stage win was something really missing,” said Impey, who outsprinted Belgium’s Tiesj Benoot to become just the second South African stage winner since Robert Hunter in Montpellier in 2007.

“I got the win on Bastille Day. It’s fantastic! It’s a dream come true.”

Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe retained the yellow jersey, while Peter Sagan kept the green jersey for points.

Monday’s Stage 10 features a 217.5-km ride from Saint-flour to Albi that is relatively flat, but notable for its 1,000-metre altitude.

The Oakland Athletics acquired right-hander Homer Bailey from the Kansas City Royals Sunday afternoon in exchange for a minor-league prospect.

Bailey, 33, is 7-6 with a 4.80 ERA in 18 starts this season. He joined the Royals during the off-season after spending his first 12 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds.

A recent hot streak by Bailey likely increased Oakland’s interest in making a deal. In his last eight starts, Bailey is 3-1 with a 3.35 ERA.

Bailey was slated to start Sunday, but the Royals scratched him as reports surfaced about the trade.

The Royals got infielder Kevin Merrell, who was Oakland’s firstround draft pick in 2017. Merrell, 23, is expected to report to double-a Northwest Arkansas.

England won the Cricket World Cup for the first time after New Zealand matched its 15 in a Super Over, but lost on fewer boundaries scored in the match after an extraordinary final in London was tied on Sunday.

“I am lost for words. I can’t believe what has happened. I can’t get my head around it,” England fast-bowler Chris Woakes said. “It has probably been the best day for cricket in this country.”
