GOT earns record 32 Emmy nominations

Fantasy series leads the charge for hbo with 32 emmy nods

Fans might have been disappointed, but Emmy voters got behind the final season of HBO’S Game of Thrones Tuesday.

The fantasy series led nominations for the annual television awards, which will be handed out in September.

HBO got a leading 137 nominations, including 32 for Game of Thrones. That number sets the record for the most any program has received in a single season ( besting NYPD Blue’s previous record of 26 in 1994).

Netflix was next in line with 117 nominations.

Other big nominations went to Amazon’s comedy The Marvelous Mrs Maisel (20), HBO’S Chernobyl (19), NBC’S Saturday Night Live (18), HBO’S Barry (17), FX’S Fosse/ Verdon (17) and the Netflix drama When They See Us (16).

On the Cancon front, SCTV veterans Eugene Levy and Catherine O’hara both scored nominations for Schitt’s Creek. The CBC comedy is set to end after its sixth and final season.

Also flying the red and white is Ottawa-born actress Sandra Oh, nominated for her role on BBC America’s Killing Eve. The Golden Globe winner and her Eve co-star Jodie Comer are both vying for best actress.

HBO’S Thrones, which caused fans unhappy with the storyline to launch a petition to reshoot the final season, has won best drama three times. The series, which was created by David Benioff and Dan Weiss, will be going up against FX’S Pose, Bravo’s Killing Eve, HBO’S Succession, NBC’S This Is Us, AMC’S Better Call Saul, Netflix’s Bodyguard and Netflix’s Ozark. Thrones and This Is Us are the only two returning nominees in the category from last year, with new seasons of Stranger Things and The Handmaid’s Tale not eligible due to their release dates.

In addition to Schitt’s Creek, the best comedy nominees include Barry, Amazon’s Fleabag, Netflix’s Russian Doll, NBC’S The Good Place and HBO’S Veep.

The lead actor in a limited series or movie nominees will feature Oscar winners Benicio Del Toro (Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora), Mahershala Ali (HBO’S True Detective) and Sam Rockwell (Fosse/verdon) competing against Hugh Grant (Amazon’s A Very English Scandal), Jharrel Jerome (When They See Us) and Jared Harris (Chernobyl).

Likewise, the female nominees in the same category include Oscar winners Michelle Williams (Fosse/verdon) and Patricia Arquette (Escape at Dannemora) going up against Amy Adams (Showtime’s Sharp Objects), as well as Aunjanue Ellis (When They See Us), Joey King (Hulu’s The Act) and Niecy Nash (When They See Us).

And while Thrones’ multiple nominations might have been a surprise, the list of snubs was long.

After 12 seasons as one of TV’S biggest comedies ever, The Big Bang Theory was shut out entirely — including four-time winner Jim Parsons.

Richard Madden, who was lauded for his Netflix thriller Bodyguard, was also left off the lead actor list despite winning a Golden Globe earlier this year.

Meanwhile, big name actors who made the transition to the small screen were snubbed as well, including George Clooney (Hulu’s Catch-22), Julia Roberts (Amazon’s Homecoming), Emma Stone (Netflix’s Maniac) and Jim Carrey (Showtime’s Kidding).

The awards are scheduled to air Sept. 22 on Fox and CTV.
