The Quebec-based company focuses on fit, fabric and comfort. And its curated range of six styles in various colour washes are all made at its own manufacturing facility not too far from Montreal.
We caught up with Eric Wazana, the founder and creative director of Yoga Jeans, to learn more about the brand, its mission and why making denim in Canada is so important to the brand.
Q When and why did you first start Yoga Jeans?
A My passion for creativity and search for individuality was ignited at a young age. Every year before school, my mother would buy me a new pair of jeans, but I was never satisfied with the look of traditional denim.
I would beat them up against the sidewalk, distress them with sandpaper I found in the garage and make rips with the edge of an old Coca-cola bottle cap. My jeans weren’t right until they had a worn-in, vintage look.
From those early experiments in distressing my own jeans, I found my true love for denim. With those childhood experiences close to my heart, I decided to create a company of my own.
My passion and enthusiasm soon spread to my younger brother Jacob. Together, we set out on our mission to create the most comfortable and sought-after denim in the world.
Q What makes it different from other denim brands?
A In such an oversaturated marketplace, we always knew we wanted our jeans to stand out. We thought about what would set our jeans apart from the others.
What was often lacking in traditional denim was the most valuable asset of all: comfort. After studying women’s various body shapes and daily movements, we started by deconstructing traditional denim patterns and fabrics, and remade them into a new pair of jeans that were so breathable, flexible and comfortable that a woman could even practise yoga in them. That is how Yoga Jeans was born.
