If you’re a fan of the wizarding world of Harry Potter, this may be the lottery home you’ve been looking for.
Granted, it’s not quite Gryffindor Tower, however, you do enter the Harry Potter room via the King ’s Cross Station platform 93/4. As far as accommodations go, even Potter himself might approve of this bedroom done up in true Potteresque style with proper knick knacks, accessories and more to entice young wizards into an upstairs sleeping quarters.
But for us muggles — non-magical folks — who may not be into all things Harry and the goings on at Hogwarts, this 2019 Cash & Cars lottery home could easily cast its own spell over you.
Located in southwest Edmonton in Jagare Ridge, this custom 3,139-square-foot, two-storey home from Kimberley Homes, with four bedrooms and threeand-a-half bathrooms — including $10,000 cash and a 2019 Honda — is valued at more than $1 million, and is the first grand prize for this year’s lottery.
The house’s expansive main floor is cleverly deceptive. There’s a U-shaped kitchen, a dining nook with soaring 18-foot ceilings and a great room with a gas fireplace. But that is only part of the first floor, which also includes a secondary suite that is secondary in name only. This suite has its own full kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom. More importantly, neither portion feels cut-off or cramped; each feels as if it is the sole main-floor occupant.
“Every year is a little bit different,” said Steve Ruggiero, president and CEO of Kimberley Homes, which has partnered with Cash & Cars by creating lottery homes for 10 years. “We learn things about the supporters of the lottery program and we attempt to continue to produce new homes with new ideas that perhaps they haven’t seen before. This year, we decided to introduce a home to the lottery program that has a secondary living quarters.”
It’s an interesting way to show how a beloved relative can be cared for in the environment of their own home be it for additional support, aging or illness, said Ruggiero, who notes that working with the Cash & Cars lottery to support making life better for Albertans and their families facing cancer is important.
“If there is a cause to be linked with on a year-to-year basis, what better cause could there be than supporting cancer research?”
As far as this year’s lottery home’s distinctive secondary suite, Ruggiero added, “We’re trying to provide a lens of how this can be done in your own home. It’s also an opportunity to utilize the square footage differently than it has ever been done in the time we’ve been involved with lottery homes.”
Upstairs, in addition to the Harry Potter dormitory, there’s another bedroom done up in a feminine touch with a modern desk doubling as a homework or make-up spot, a bonus room set up as a den, and the master enclave — a nice touch to this interpretation includes two well-appointed walkin closets.
“I think our buyers will love it,” said Ryan Campbell, director, corporate relations for the Alberta Cancer Foundation. “It’s a fantastic location with great accessibility and the secondary suite is a nice touch that provides a little uniqueness to the home. As always, Kimberley has made sure the finishings are all top notch.”
Proceeds from this year’s lottery will go toward a variety of cancer initiatives starting with detection and going all the way to treatment and care across Alberta’s 17 cancer centres, which includes Edmonton’s Cross Cancer Institute.
“Last year we raised $1.9 million, which was the most we ever contributed through the lottery and we’re hoping to exceed that this year,” said Campbell.
The 2019 edition of the lottery offers 2,675 prizes valued at more than $3.8 million. Other major prizes include a furnished Brownstone in Calgary from Truman Homes, and a third grand prize of a $270,000 annuity. The Early Bird package, worth more than $497,000, includes a fully furnished condo in Calgary’s University District, a Jeep Wrangler and $15,000.
