- BY CAITLIN FLEMING Edmonton Meals on Wheels

What would you do if age or mobility issues prevented you from getting to the grocery store? How would you get the healthy food that you need to survive? For many people using Edmonton Meals on Wheels, this is a challenge they face every day.

For the past several years, we have seen an increase in the number of individuals turning to us for help. One of the services that has seen the most growth is the Grocery Bag program. The Grocery Bag helps get basic grocery items to people who cannot shop for themselves. People who, because of health or mobility issues, can’t get to the grocery store. Having groceries delivered to their home gives them the help they need. It’s this help that allows them to be independent.

The Grocery Bag has a set list of over 110 items. From fresh produce to household cleaning items, clients pick what they need. The list is designed to help them get the staples—items they need to keep their cupboards and fridge full. Clients send in their orders up to once a week. On Wednesday or Thursday, between 4:30 to 7 p.m., a volunteer driver will deliver the groceries to them. It’s a simple service but has a life changing effect on those using the program. People like Fay, who has been receiving groceries from Meals on Wheels for years. After suffering some serious health issues, including many trips to the emergency room and multiple medical tests, Fay found some much needed relief in the Grocery Bag program. “I hope it is something that exists forever as I completely rely on it, as I’m sure many others do as well. It has been a true gift to my existence,” she says.

The Grocery Bag program is open to Edmonton residents. Orders must be between $15 - $100. A $5 service fee is added to each order. All volunteers who deliver the groceries are screened and security-checked.
