Chaos AB festival leaves site with damaged grass

Kinsmen Park turf should be repaired in time for the park’s next event: official

Masses of heavy metal fans that descended on Kinsmen Park for the Chaos AB music festival this weekend contributed to damage to the park’s grass, according to city officials.

While the city expects damage to grounds during events like this, the damage is severe enough to delay cleanup by a day, forcing the rescheduling of a community baseball game.

“Given the wet conditions and the large number people at this weekend’s Chaos AB music festival, turf damage was not unexpected,” said Karen Mcdonnell, a communications adviser with the city, via email.

Mcdonnell said the festival will be responsible for the cost of restoring the field but that it’s not yet known how pricey the remediation work will be.

“We are working with the City of Edmonton in the restoration of any damages to the grass and field as outlined in our original agreement with the Festival and Events team at Kinsmen Park,” said Live Nation, the company that organized Chaos AB, in a statement.

When asked whether the city would continue to allow Chaos AB to take place at Kinsmen Park in future years, Mcdonnell said that no decisions have been made and that the city is continuing conversations with Live Nation. The city says the field will be restored with plenty of time to spare for the next event at Kinsmen Park, an Eid celebration that takes place from Aug. 10-12.

Bands including Marilyn Manson, Slayer and Disturbed played at Chaos AB.
