Tiny home in a kit just a click away

- CHRIS ARNOLD

You can buy almost everything you need for your house online, so why not buy the house itself ?

For around the price of a midrange car, you can have your new home delivered to you. That is, as long as you don’t mind some assembly and living in a tiny house.

Tiny homes have developed a following in recent years for the low cost and environmental and economic benefits, plus in a space so small you’re almost forced to clean any messes immediately, helping to keep the house tidy.

Ecohousemart is selling prefabricated tiny houses online for anyone to set up, provided they have the know-how. As it says on the Amazon listing, labour is not included in the box. Neither is a foundation, windows, doors, roofing, siding, insulation or flooring materials. For just over $53,000 you are getting 1,000 square feet, of floor space.

If that’s too big, Lillevilla offers 292 square feet, a house for just under $25,000 that comes similarly packaged without common finishings such as roofing or plumbing.

For around $6,500, 113 square feet can be yours to call home. The Lillevilla Escape is closer to the size of a shed than a cabin, but people have turned it into a home.

“A good choice and the kit is wonderful. Plan on future purchase for my tiny home village in the Rockies,” one Amazon reviewer said.

In harsher climates, adding insulation, proper floors and roofing may be all it takes to have a dream home in the mountains.

Some tiny homes are even built on wheels, allowing for easy transport once assembled.

Tumbleweed Tiny Houses offers tiny homes on wheels for around $70,000. Wheeled tiny homes offer similar amenities to an RV, but with a more traditional homelike feel.

And since real estate is all about location, when your house is on wheels, you don’t have to settle for the spot you originally chose.
