WHYTE, Alexander Duffus

-

January 3, 1943 - April 23, 2020 It is with great sorrow and broken hearts that we announce the loss of Alex Whyte who passed away peacefully at home with family by his side after a short illness. Devoted husband, father and grandfather, Alex is dearly missed by his loving wife of 51 years, Elaine; son Jason (Kevin); daughter Kerri (Barry) Gabourie; and adoring grandchildren Bethany, Owen and Ella. He is survived by his sister Norma (Ron) Klein, sister-in-law Heather Whyte, Aunt Jean Terry, and lifelong friend Rick Paul. Alex was predeceased by his mother Isabella, father Stanley George (stepmother Minnie), sister Edna and brother Stanley. Alex is fondly remembered by a large extended family, close friends, numerous colleagues and the many whom he generously mentored throughout his life. Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Alex immigrated to Canada together with his mother in 1953 at age 10, where Edmonton became his home. Evidenced from an early age, Alex’s inventiveness and passion for all things mechanical lead him to excel as a young machinist, a self-taught engineer and successful executive in the international oil and gas industry, including Alberta Oil Tool, Barber Industries, Argus Machine, Griffith Oil Tool, National Oilwell Varco, and General Manager of Wenzel Downhole Tools prior to his retirement. Alex thrived on world travel, leaving a lasting legacy of machine innovation and respected expertise throughout many countries, along with a wide network of professional relationships he highly valued. An avid reader, collector of antique technical books, automotive and railroad enthusiast, Alex was constantly inquisitive, creative and equally keen to teach others. Family, friends and colleagues alike remember Alec for his sharp intellect, keen sense of humor, adventurous spirit, entertaining stories, and witty anecdotes. Al’s profound love for his wife and especially close bonds with his son, daughter and grandchildren was unique and will forever be cherished. Highly independent and stoic, Dad was a pillar of strength for his family. His genuineness, loyalty and compassion were felt by all those whose lives Alex touched. We wish to extend our deepest thanks and appreciation to Pastor David, the Lord of Life congregation, our extended family, and many friends for the love and support received during our loss. A sincere thank you to the staff of Nurse Next Door for their exemplary care and kindhearted support during Alex’s final time at home. A celebration of Alex’s life will be held at a later date for all to attend and enjoy. "It’s just right." - Al’s trademark expression no matter what the circumstance.
