An Edmonton family is reeling after they lost a father, mother and nephew to drowning earlier this week near Nordegg.

Partab Rai Oad, along with his wife Sonam and his nephew, Anoop Kumar Oad died Tuesday after they went to Crescent Falls in west-central Alberta for family time with their children.

Lachman Oad, Sonam Oad’s brother-in-law, said Anoop Oad went into the water to swim before he got swept under the falls, his uncle went after him and he, too, was swept under. Sonam Oad called for help before she, too, went under.

Their children, aged three, six and 10, watched on, Lachman Oad said. “The older of the three children, he was calling and he got a hold of the other two kids and took them away,” he said.

Lachman Oad said family, both here in Canada and in Pakistan, are left dealing with the emotional toll as news continues to spread.

Crescent Falls is about 322 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.
