The linen life

-

Linen = summer. Sure, linen bedsheets, tablecloths and napkins have secured their place in our lives all year round, but when it comes to clothing, most of us prefer saving linen for summer. And with good reason! The breezy fabric is about as lightweight and breathable as it gets, and pretty much guaranteed to keep you cool in the sunshine. Rebecca Tay discovers five linen styles to relax in this summer.

SUMMER WHITES

A white dress is a perennial summer classic, and this linen-and-viscose blend version features a pleated yoke that looks smart for work, a midi length perfect for running errands around the city and an adjustable waist tie you can loosen after a big weekend barbecue. Oak + Fort, ca.oakandfort.com | $78

PINK SHERBET

Summer calls for lightweight layers you can throw in your bag, ready to pull out at dusk or if the sky suddenly clouds over. This hand-dyed, ombré rectangular scarf by Auxiliary is made from 100 per cent washed linen and features a natural, oh-so-touchable texture that somehow just gets better with wear. Aritzia, aritzia.com | $48

NAVY SEAL

We love linen for its relaxed, airy feel, which makes it all the more surprising (in a good way) when we come across a style that has a bit of structure to it. Enter this navy dress by MICHAEL Michael Kors, featuring cool laced details and brass grommets. Team with flat sandals for day or heels for a night out. Michael Kors, michaelkors.ca | $395

PUT YOUR BACK INTO IT

If you have any events on the horizon, this apron front, backless jumpsuit is just the ticket. A subtle chalk stripe and double ribbon ties lend a slightly vintage feel, while the silhouette is nothing if not modern. Club Monaco, clubmonaco.com | $269

STRIPE IT RIGHT

There’s something about a pair of striped linen shorts that reminds us of summer camp; just throw on a cute slogan tee and you’re ready to head to the campfire. This tie-waist pair features stripes in a coral and white combo — a sweet alternative to classic blue and white. Joe Fresh, joefresh.com | $24
