Former pro and BBC `Voice of Golf' dies

Longtime BBC Sports broadcaste­r and World Golf Hall of Famer Peter Alliss died Sunday at 89.

Known to a generation of European fans as the ` Voice of Golf,' Alliss passed away at his home in Surrey, England, after a short battle with illness, according to the Ryder Cup website.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Peter Alliss, truly one of golf's greats. Peter made an indelible mark on everything he did in our game, but especially as a player and a broadcaste­r, and he leaves a remarkable legacy,” European Tour chief executive officer Keith Pelley said. 31 tournament­s across the globe and competing on eight Ryder Cup teams. He swept the Italian Open, Spanish Open and Portugal Open in 1958.

He began his tenure as the BBC'S lead golf commentato­r in 1978 and was known for his dry humour. He called for the final time the 2020 Masters, working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Alliss was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2012.

Hovland birdies last hole to triumph

Viktor Hovland rolled in a 12-foot birdie putt on the final hole to clinch victory at the Mayakoba Classic in rainy Playa del Carmen in Mexico on Sunday.

The 23-year-old's winning total of 20-under 264 at the El Camaleon Golf Club was one better than American Aaron Wise, who carded the joint best round of the day, a bogey-free 8-under 63. Adam Long (67) and Tom Hoge (69) finished three back in a tie for third.

Canada's Corey Conners finished seven strokes back.

Stanford pockets first tour win in home state

Angela Stanford picked up her first profession­al win in her home state on Sunday, firing a closing-round 4-under 67 to win the Volunteers of America Classic at The Colony, Tex.

The 20-year LPGA veteran, who entered the day one stroke behind a trio of golfers, finished with a 7-under 277 to beat out all three of the 54-hole leaders by two strokes for her seventh career victory.
