City homicide detectives are investigating after two bodies were found at a southwest Edmonton home Wednesday night.

Officers called to the small bungalow near 78 Avenue and 111 Street at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday discovered two bodies, police said in a Thursday morning news release. Both deaths are being treated as suspicious, police said, and the homicide section is leading the investigation.

Police tape surrounded the home and one marked vehicle remained outside the location just after 8 a.m. Thursday.

Autopsies have not yet been scheduled. If confirmed, the deaths would be the first and second homicides in 2021.

At this time last year there were no homicides, however 2020 ended among the city's Top 5 deadliest years for homicides after a total of 37 were recorded.

The last three homicides of 2020 all occurred in early December.

On Dec. 8, Mahad Bashir Farah, 25, died of a gunshot wound near 109 Street and 109 Avenue. In two surveillance footage videos released by Edmonton police, two people were seen running from the area immediately after the homicide. Police continue to investigate his death and no one has been charged.

Then, on Dec. 9, Rauf Abdu Muzero, 20, was found dead inside a townhouse near 34 Avenue and 58 Street. While an autopsy was completed, his cause of death has been withheld. No one has been charged with Muzero's death.

Investigators believe his death is related to “events” on Dec. 6 that occurred in the Hillview One townhouse complex and anyone with information is asked to contact police.

The last homicide in 2020 was that of a two-year-old boy.

On Dec. 6, police were called to a home in southeast Edmonton for a two-year-old boy in medical distress who later died in hospital. His name and cause of death have been withheld by police. No one has been charged.
