AHEAD BY A CENTURY Edmonton's Celeigh Cardinal has just released a beautiful, funky cover of one of the Tragically Hip's sleeper, deeper hits. Cardinal notes, “I wanted to celebrate Gord Downie's contribution to Indigenous communities with a joyful version of this song. The words `no dress rehearsal, this is our life' still run over and over in my head — what a massive truth that is. The music video is a celebration of our lives. It is filled with my friends, family, community, including folks who are ambassadors from the Downie &

Wenjack Fund, who are sharing their joy. This video is all about shining a light on all types of very necessary types of love we need to really live.” Note guest appearance by Oregano Irwin and his human, Janis Irwin.

MONOLITH

More fittingly online pandemic content comes to us from Tia Ashley Kushniruk and Mile Zero Dance. The 21-minute, multiscreen film takes an impressionistic look at how women are exploited by powerful figures, often under the guise of good intentions. “I would say that this work is a reflection of the abuse and trauma I have experienced within dance as an institution,” says Kushniruk. “This piece was borne out of a necessity from those experiences to describe and challenge those in power. But, I also wanted to articulate it in a way that is not overt and high stakes — but rather, abstract and ridiculous.” Killer industrial soundtrack, too.

NIGHT OF THE KINGS (2020)

In this multinational co-production directed by Philippe Lacôte, a young man is sent to La Maca, a prison in the middle of the Ivorian forest ruled by its inmates. As tradition goes, with the rising of the red moon, he is designated by the Boss to be the new “Roman” and must tell a story to the other prisoners.
