VW releases pricing and range for ID. 4

- ANDREW MCCREDIE

The arrival of Volkswagen's first bona fide electric vehicle to Canada sounds like a winner. At least according to two important numbers released by VW Canada on the 2022 VW ID.4.

The first number is a starting price of $44,995, so the 201-horsepower, rear-wheel-drive five-door hatchback will qualify for the $5,000 federal rebate, in addition to incentive programs offered by participating provinces. The first deliveries are expected to begin in the late summer, with the allwheel-drive, 300-hp model expected to arrive in Canadian dealerships by the end of 2021.

The second number is a little more nebulous, as the automaker cites a full charge range on the rear-wheel drive model of “up to 400 kilometres” from the 82 kwh battery pack. No range figure has been released for the all-wheeldrive model. The Canadian ID. 4 model differs from its U.S. counterpart. Because of our colder temperatures, it comes standard with a heated steering wheel, heated side mirrors and washer nozzles, and a heated windshield. A standard on-board heat pump reduces the electric heating system's reliance on resistive heating, thereby helping to improve the ID. 4's range in cold conditions.

Expect supply to be somewhat limited at the time of launch, but once production begins at the VW plant in Tennessee in 2022, it's hoped that supply will meet what could be strong demand for the well priced and well positioned electric vehicle.
