Stop whining about equalization funds

-

Referendums can benefit a democracy, as Mr. Staples suggests. However, their worth depends on understanding full details on background, intent and alternatives, and strong approval by honestly informed voters. We do not have that.

Relying on the single, biased position of Fairness Alberta is questionable; its message is blame the feds for our troubles and our money is wasted down east.

It does not seem to recognize the real purpose or operation of the equalization formula, the protection originally offered and rejected in the NEP, nor the foolishly wasted billions by our own province.

The article relies on Bill Bewick, a Wildroser and American politics instructor who seems to believe that Canada has similar provincial/federal structure to the U.S. Much of what we as individuals pay toward “equalization” even returns to Alberta. Some tweaks will always be required for old legislation, but rejecting the equalization formula without fully comprehending it is ridiculous.

Albertans are not separatists. The equalization referendum, however, is obviously designed to promote such ideas. Let's get on with the improvements that Alberta needs in diversifying the economy, preparing energy transitions, and planning for the future instead of whining.

Our elected government has the responsibility to decide and work on our behalf without silly referendums to continue the foolishness!
