Barrel racer enjoys double dose of success
Whether riding Mo or Mac, Wenda Johnson has found success so far at the Calgary Stampede rodeo.
She has ridden both of her horses in the barrel-racing event to accumulate $20,000 in earnings to top the Pool A standings.
“I finished off with the young horse, Mo, whose registered name is Steal Money,” said Johnson of Pawhuska, Okla., whose time of 17.28 placed her in first and earned her a $5,500 payday. Bertina Olafson, of Hudson Bay, Sask., finished second on Monday with a time of 17.42 seconds, while Justine Elliott, of Lacombe, was right behind her in third at 17.61. Olafson finished second in Pool A with $12,250 in winnings, while Elliott tied for fourth with Lynette Brodoway, of Brooks, at $8,000.
BULL RIDING
JC Mortensen, of Paulden, Ariz., posted a score of 88.5 points atop Grey Tower III on Monday to win $5,500 for finishing first in the bull-riding competition.
Mortensen finished second in the Pool A standings behind Dakota Buttar of Kindersley, Sask., who amassed $15,500 in earnings through four days. Advancing to Showdown Sunday along with Mortensen and Buttar were Cody Coverchuk ($4,500), of Meadow Lake, Sask., as well as Garrett Green, of Meeting Creek, Alta., and Denton Fugate, of Ash Flat, Ark., who tied for fourth at $3,000 in earnings.
SADDLE BRONC
Montana cowboys Chase Brooks and Sage Newman finished in first and second thanks to rerides aboard Shoshone Mountain and Yuppie Bubbles, respectively. Brooks earned 89.5 points to earn $5,500, while Newman had an 86.5-point ride to take home $4,500. Meanwhile, Big Valley's Zeke Thurston scored 85 points atop Conman, while Wildwood's Dawson Hay took full advantage of his re-ride aboard Yo Yo Marble with an 80-point ride.
STEER WRESTLING
One day after his brother posted a time of 4.2 seconds to win $5,500, Cody Cassidy, of Donalda, replicated that feat on Monday. Curtis Cassidy followed up his first-place finish in steer wrestling on Sunday with a fourth-place showing (4.7 seconds) to win another $2,500.
