THREE TO SEE

-

BALI IMPRESSIONS

David Kunin — an ex-edmontonian photographer and former Tokyo rabbi living in Syracuse, N.Y. — seeks out places that bridge the gap between the sacred and the mundane, focusing on people living out their daily lives. As he puts it about his images, including a series of photos up at the downtown Padmanadi taken in artist hot-spot Bali, “the colourful blurred abstraction leads the viewer away from detail to merely a quick impression of the scene in all its diversity and movement.” The swirling, evocative photos come down first thing next week, so pop by to one of the most delicious restaurants in town — and note that a portion of sales goes to Kunin's ongoing charitable work in Southeast Asia.

Details: Though Aug. 3 at Padmanadi downtown (10740 101 St.), no charge.

BILLIE ZIZI

There are some very large crowds emerging with music tacked onto them all weekend here in the Albertan third eye of the storm, so if you want something with a little more comfortable elbow room, the Edmonton Ski Club Patio Series continues in the echo of the folk fest with the pure charisma of our own avantjazz soul singer Billie Zizi. Also, be sure to check out upcoming events at edmontonskiclub.com, including Martin Kerr, the Royal Foundry and Whale & the Wolf. Details: 6 p.m. at 9613 96 Ave., $55 at edmontonskiclub.com.

AIRPLANE! (1980)

Shockingly offensive yet utterly hilarious, the closest thing you see to this sort of sketchcomedy-as-a-film these days is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. A parody of the post-nixon tsunami of 1970s American disaster films, Airplane!'s charm is in how straight its main characters, played by Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty, spark on old romance hampered by “a drinking problem,” cue a shirt-spilled cocktail. Leslie Nielsen is especially on fire in this one — just don't call him “Shirley.” 88 minutes. Details: 7 p.m. at Metro Cinema (8712 109 St.), $13. fgriwkowsky@postmedia.com Twitter: @fisheyefoto
