NORDIX TOWNHOMES: THE PERFECT PORTAL FOR PANORAMA PLAYTIME

Seasonal adventures extend past first-class winter skiing to summer fun

- ANDREW PENNER

CALGARY At day's end, when the western sky flares up with red and orange hues behind the towering summit of Mount Nelson, you can bet that dozens of homeowners at Panorama Mountain Resort will be hunkering down in their hot tubs, sitting around a fire, and swapping stories about the day's adventures. And, no doubt, the future owners at Nordix — the new Scandinavian-inspired townhome development at the base of the slopes — will happily join in on the Panorama party.

Of course, the homeowners at Nordix, where sales opened April 6, will have far more going for them than just the evening rituals with friends and family. After all, just being able to call Panorama a “home away from home” is reason enough to, well, put on a party hat.

“It's a tight-knit community up here,” says Eric Houvenaeghel, a homeowner since 2016 in the mountain-surrounded Kootenay resort. “Our favourite aspect of spending time here is the active lifestyle and interests that we share with our Panorama family. In winter, the skiing is phenomenal and the local ski club has been our way to get connected, meet like-minded people, and just enjoy the beautiful natural spaces that we have here. We're here every weekend in winter and we also spend the majority of our summers at Panorama.”

Panorama boasts a 1,300-metre vertical drop, one of the longest in North America, as well as 2,975-acres of patrolled terrain. Famous for its non-stop blue cruisers, there is plenty of terrain for every level of skier at Panorama. When something even more adventurous is calling, RK Heliski operates bucket-list day trips into the backcountry.

Young families who are active in the outdoors, such as the Houvenaeghels, make up the largest segment of homeowners at Panorama.

The Houvenaeghels, who are originally from Toronto and now live in Calgary, own a fully renovated, ski-in-ski-out, three-bedroom townhome in Panorama. Thanks in part to the new work-from-home trend, there are also plenty of young professionals who are looking to establish a base camp for their adventures at Panorama.

Panorama is situated 20 minutes west of Invermere, B.C., and approximately 3½ hours west of Calgary. It is located in the Purcell Mountains and along the famous Powder Highway. While much of the current infrastructure at Panorama was built by Intrawest in the 1990s and early 2000s, the resort was sold to a local group of investors in 2010.

“The Nordix townhomes are in a great location at the base of the Silver Platter,” says Dave Mcgrath, who is leading the sales team at Nordix at the new presentation centre at the resort. “They are skiin, ski-out units. The floor plans are all about active living and hosting. Integrated gear rooms, nine-foot ceilings, heated garages, generous decks with glass railings, generous kitchen islands, gas fireplaces, vaulted ceilings, and oversize windows are just a few of the highlights.”

While these bright and contemporary homes immediately present a warm and inviting atmosphere, the finishing touches — such as stone countertops, wood accents, and custom millwork — ice the cake in terms of creating a warm ambience when hosting your Panorama party.

And, of course, the Scandinavian-inspired exteriors — they feature exposed timber, natural stone, angled rooflines and open gables — yield an immediate “wow” factor for anyone coming up the drive.

Phase 1 of the project, which will feature 24 homes in two separate buildings, will break ground this spring with additional phases planned in the future. There are a handful of floor plans available in Phase 1, including three-, four- and five-bedroom units on three levels. The homes start at $760,000.

Panorama is at the epicentre of some of the best outdoor adventure possibilities in North America — and in every season of the year. Indeed, as the white stuff recedes, Panoramites can get out and play one of the best mountain golf courses in the world at Greywolf.

The 6th hole, appropriately dubbed Cliffhanger, is always something to savour. Ripping down single-track at the lift-accessed bike park and sauntering along stunning hiking trails are two other popular pursuits during the summer season at Panorama.

“Our perfect Panorama day will definitely conclude with a get together with friends,” says Houvenaeghel. “Guaranteed, if you've had an outdoor adventure in Panorama, you're going to have a few things to celebrate!”
