Angels fire manager amid losing streak

-

The Los Angeles Angels fired manager Joe Maddon on Tuesday with the team mired in a 12-game losing streak. Third base coach Phil Nevin was the Angels' interim manager for the game against visiting Boston on Tuesday night.

Maddon went 130-148 with the Angels, who hired him before the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season. Maddon spent three decades of his career as a player and coach for the Angels before going on to an impressive managerial career in Tampa Bay and with the Chicago Cubs, who ended their 108-year World Series championship drought during his tenure in 2016.

After finishing with losing records in Maddon's first two seasons, the Angels were off to a strong 27-17 start to this season before their current losing streak began. They are one loss shy of tying the longest skid in franchise history.

Nevin, 51, is in his first season with the Angels. He previously worked as an assistant coach with the San Francisco Giants (2017) and New York Yankees (2018-21).

RADUCANU INJURED, WIMBLEDON IN DOUBT

U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu has no idea if she would be fit to play at Wimbledon, the 19-year-old said after a “freak injury” forced her to retire from her opening match at the WTA 250 event in Nottingham on Tuesday.

Britain's Raducanu retired when she was a break down at 4-3 in the opening set against Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic, nearly half an hour into the match after she suffered what appeared to be a side strain.

Raducanu reached the last 16 at Wimbledon in 2021 but will need a quick recovery to compete at this year's tournament which will be held from June 27 to July 10.

Asked if she would be fit for Wimbledon, Raducanu said: “I've got no idea.

“It could've just seized up and spasmed and then it's really bad for a few days. But I've got no idea. I can't diagnose myself, so I'll get it checked out.”

Raducanu, who has been without a full-time coach since April, shot to stardom last September when, as a qualifier, she won the U.S. Open title, becoming Britain's first female Grand Slam champion since Virginia Wade in 1977.
