Police investigat­e death in city's southeast

City police continue to investigat­e the suspicious death of a woman that occurred in southeast Edmonton over the weekend.

On June 19, at about 7:40 p.m., Edmonton police responded to a report of a death at a residence near 79 Street and 82 Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a woman in her 50s dead inside the residence.

An autopsy was completed on Wednesday, but the cause and manner of death are pending further testing. If confirmed as a homicide, it would be Edmonton's 18th of the year.

Of the 17 confirmed homicides in 2022, three people have died of gunshot wounds, four people died of stab wounds, one person died of blunt force head injury, one person died of blunt force trauma and stab wounds, two people died of blunt force trauma, one person's cause of death was withheld, and one is to be determined.

Four people were also victims of police shootings. Postmedia includes police shootings causing death in its homicide count, while the Edmonton Police Service does not.

The three police shootings so far this year have resulted in the deaths of four people.

Fifteen of the homicide victims were males while two were women. The youngest victim was 16 years old and the oldest victim was 85 years old.

Police also continue to investigat­e two other suspicious deaths from earlier this year.

On Jan. 3, at about 1:30 a.m., officers responded to a report of an assault at the Herb Jamieson Centre, near 100 Street and 105A Avenue. Paramedics treated a 54-year-old man and transporte­d him to hospital where he later died.

Thenonjan.23,atabout4:30a.m., Edmonton Fire Rescue Services called police to a suspicious fire at a home in the area of 118 Avenue and 79 Street.

While investigat­ing, the body of 32-year-old Thomas Richard Russell was found inside the building.

His cause and manner of death are pending additional testing.
