Alberta builders honoured at national awards
Housing industry celebrates its best
New homebuilders and renovators, community developers and industry partners from across the country raised a glass to a successful year at the Canadian Home Builders Association National Awards for Housing Excellence gala held May 10 in Saint John, N.B. None raised them higher than lucky CHBA members from Alberta who dominated the night's top honours, capturing two of the three major awards.
In a dead tie, Jayman Built and Douglas Homes of Calgary were chosen above all other national entries for the distinguished Design Excellence Award with superior cumulative results in the new homes and new homes spaces categories. In 2023, Jayman's Edmonton division won this award in a three-way tie that included its Calgary counterpart, which has now received this national honour three years in a row.
Co-winner Douglas Homes scored just as many cumulative points and, in addition, picked up Best Entry-Level Home.
The Renovation Excellence Award went to veteran award winner Ultimate Renovations of Calgary with an excellent showing in three of the five categories in which they were finalists.
The third major award was for Marketing Excellence, presented to Mattamy Homes and Gladstone Media in Toronto.
Alberta proved itself to be a great place to build a community as the CHBA bestowed awards upon two neighbourhoods in the province, both by Dream Unlimited. Elan in Beaumont was named Canada's Best New Community, while Alpine Park in Calgary was named the country's Best Growing Community.
More than 900 entries in 48 categories were submitted, making 2024 a record-breaking year for entries. Nearly 300 volunteer industry experts countrywide faced some tough choices as they selected the finalists and winners.
Edmonton builders showed up in a big way, with CHBA Edmonton Large Volume Builder of the Year, Jayman Built, winning Best Detached Production Home under 1,800 square feet for the Taylor 24. UrbanAge Homes took two awards in the Best Detached Production Home category for The Beverly (2,101 to 2,400 sq. ft) and The Augusta (2,401 to 2,800 sq.ft).
The Beverly received a CHBA Edmonton Award of Excellence in March.
In the New Home Spaces category, Vicky's Homes was awarded Best Custom Kitchen and Best Bedroom/Primary Suite for its entry called Vernazza.
Back in the renovation department, Benjamin Matthew Contracting won Best Whole Home Renovation, $200,000 to $300,000 for its River Valley Revival project.
Other Alberta moments during awards night included more hardware for Jayman Built, Douglas Homes and Calgreen Homes of Calgary, and CADO Developments and Stranville Living of Lethbridge.
“These awards truly demonstrate the variety of homes that are built and renovated in Canada each year. Whether for rent or ownership, changing life circumstances or needs, the professionals that build and renovate Canadian homes and communities are creating spaces that people want to call home. We are proud of the accomplishments of this year's winners and finalists,” said Kevin Lee, CEO of the CHBA.
The CHBA's national organization is the voice of the residential construction industry in Canada, representing some 8,500 member firms across the country. Its membership spans new homebuilders, renovators, developers, trade contractors, building material manufacturers and suppliers, lenders, and other professionals in the housing sector.
